Visits...of All Kinds!

The girls and I snuck away for a few days to visit my parents.
While it was hot in our neck of the woods, it was even hotter in Boise. Luckily, my parents have a pool in their neighborhood. All of Boise must have been camping or vacationing or something because the pool was empty everyday! Score!
We swam.
We hit the splash park.

Enjoyed quiet time by the river at dusk.

Excitement, heat, a long drive and staying up way past bedtime eventually led to this:

Just a few short days in Boise, then we headed back with my mom in tow!
My dad followed a few days later to visit and to drive my mom home!
They had yet to see our new house, our new dogs or the chickens!!

This guy showed up right after they left.

Yes, that is a kitten.
In a nest.
In a tree.
Clearly, the word is out in the animal world that we are good people.
Funny how the universe works. When all those "let's-have-another-baby" feelings (I blame them completely on Prince George!!) start bubbling and brewing, I am flooded with babies - but of the canine/feline kind.
Not exactly what I had in mind but it has quelled the fires...
for now.

Animals Everywhere!

We were able to squeeze in another visit to Bill's Berry Farm...gosh, was that a week ago? All the days are starting to blur together. Wake up. Feed animals. Unpack boxes. And repeat. I used to wake up early just for some quiet me time. Now I am up early just to make sure all the mouths get fed!

We were first in line for the homemade doughnuts as I wanted to get home before the heat kicked in AND I wanted to make progress on the house. Some family was rolling into town and I wanted to hide the chaos as much as possible.

The plan was to get the doughnuts and dash. But...Grace wanted to ride a pony and how could I say no to that simple request. All she's asked for all summer is a shower and I can't give her that...not at least for 15 more day (who's counting?!?!) so I ponied up for the pony ride!

I caught Charlotte deep in thought here - probably thinking about how she could finagle a pony for her birthday - but they both loved riding the horses. The inevitable conversation about getting a horse did come up. As a certain grandmother recently went on a horse riding trip, I've deferred all horse-buying conversations to her! Have fun Manna!

Speaking of animals, five chickens still remain

ALTHOUGH...
I'm not certain about this one. This chicken, named Jellybean, was never the cutest thing to begin with. Her hook-beak complete with witch warts is far from cute.

Throw in the fact that she has the most enormous 'side-bite' -
if that is a thing - known to all chicken kind.

I have no idea what this means for a chicken. I haven't googled it yet but I imagine it can't be good. In fact, I noticed this very morning that the other chicks noticed Jellybean's challenged beak because they were pecking at it!! Broke my heart!

OK...I am off to feed more animals...

I mean my family...and then the animals.

One of These "Kids" Just Doesn't Belong Here

Court called me into Grace's room the other night.

When I walked in, this is all I saw.
Grace's MO.
Lots of blankets followed by a ridiculous amount of stuff animals, toys and books piled high wide.
To the point you don't think she'll be able to find a spot for herself to sleep.

I fought this battle - tried to get all the toys and animals out of her bed (figured the books can stay...yay reading!) - but clearly I lost.

(At this point in the game, she could be sleeping in a tank full of sharks and as long
as she sleeps through the night and wakes up alive, I am pretty much cool with it.)

I digress.

Court kept giving me a big, goofy grin so I figured there must be an owl loose in the house...again.

He told me to look closer. So I did.

Apparently, she makes room for real animals too!

Lucky Pup IS lucky pup!

Owl and Friends

So as I was saying, it was dusk. Mr. Owl started flapping his wings at the entrance of his hole. We figured he would take to flight and that would be that!

After a few minutes of flapping, he started climbing up the tree using his beak and talons to dig into the side of tree. About four feet above the entrance to his "house", there is a flat area. I like to call it the launch pad. After reaching the launch pad, he sat there a few more minutes, limbering up his wings. Suddenly, he threw himself into the air and hopped/flopped to the neighboring tree. It looked anything but graceful. In fact, it almost looked as if this little guy was learning to fly!

Definitely couldn't be "our" owl! The owl that wound up in our living room last week, when finally given the chance to fly away, soared quickly, confidently - like he'd been doing it for some time. We watched our new friend hop, flop and flap from branch to branch and limb to limb. He was definitely a newbie!

For some reason, I looked back at the hole and what do I see? Another owl climbing out of the hole and up to the launch pad! TWO OWLS!! From the launch pad, owl number two launched himself into the neighboring tree and followed the route of his "hole-mate"through the branches.

We are mesmerized by the owls! Giddy with excitement that we have "National Geographic" going on outside our living room window. There may have even been a discussion about acquiring some sort of night vision camera! Again, let me reiterate, we were excited! So excited that we almost missed the THIRD owl scampering out of the hole and up to the launch pad!

Charlotte was fast asleep at this point and in all of our excitement, we must have alerted Grace - in her room - that something was going on. She sauntered out to join us and we quickly pointed out the three owls to her! We all watched them bounce around in the trees for quite some time.

Feeling pretty lucky that we had three owls in our backyard, you can imagine our great surprise when a fourth owl crawled out of the hole and joined his brothers and sisters frolicking in the night. Four owls! Woo hoo!!

Just as we think things are winding down for the evening, the owls being harder and harder to track as the sky gets darker and darker, another owl pops out of the hole! FIVE OWLS!

We have five owl friends making their home in our backyard! Just another reason, we love living in the country!

In the mornings, when we wake up, one of the owls is always in the entrance of the hole - "standing guard." He always makes eye contact with me as I watch, drinking my coffee.

Throughout the day, there is usually an owl at the entrance...but over the last fews days I've noticed that by lunchtime - and throughout the afternoon - all the owls tuck themselves far and away inside their cavern of a hole. Only after dinner, do they start appearing again!

We have yet to see them all venture out of their hole again. Not because they aren't venturing out but because we've gone to bed before they start shaking and baking for the evening!

So anyway, that is our exciting late-breaking owl news! I plan on doing a lot of owl watching and I plan on doing a thorough search of Barn Owls on Google! I'll keep you posted!

You'll Never Believe It: The Follow Up

Folding laundry over the weekend, something keep catching my eye outside.

Outside the window where I was folding clothes are several large trees FULL of birds. I figured some little bird was flitting by or something.

The trees are really spectacular. One of my favorite things about our house actually. Large and full of knobby branches and holes like the this one...where you imagine an old wise owl to live.

Upon a closer look into the trees, I saw what had originally caught my eye.
Do you see it?

Yep, our little friend from Friday morning!
Alive and well in the tree outside our living room window.

Charlotte was napping when I made this discovery so I showed only Grace. We proceeded to watch and photograph Mr. Owl for the next hour!

Upon Court's arrival home later that day, we showed him. All evening we kept checking on the owl and he was still there. Clearly as curious about us as we are about him!

At dusk, we REALLY tuned in to watch the owl. Owls being nocturnal and all we thought we might get a glimpse of him taking to flight!

You didn't believe what we woke up to last week, you'll never believe what we watched unfold Saturday night!

Come back tomorrow and I will fill you in!

You'll Never Believe This

Earlier this week, Court kept saying he heard noises coming from the fireplace. I completely dismissed him. What could possibly be in the fireplace?

Again and again, he kept saying he heard a something - a bird - to be precise. Finally, a few days later, I heard it too!

We immediately got a flash flight and started looking up the dark chimney. We didn't know what to do. How do you get a bird out of a chimney? Better question, how does a bird get into a chimney?

We decided to adjust the flue in a way that might allow the bird to escape into the empty fireplace. We pulled the chain 'fencing' closed so our 'friend' wouldn't be able to fly all around the house and hoped for the best.

The next evening, Court, hearing the bird again, decided to check on our 'little friend.' This time Court saw the bird! The bird was perched in an awkward way and if persuaded a bit in a certain direction, could be freed. So up went a poker into the flue, into the chimney to do some 'persuading'.

The poker did nothing but frighten poor 'Tweety Bird' back into the depths of the chimney. We were certain that he had fallen down behind the flue doors and we both realized that this was probably the end. How was a tiny bird, who hadn't had food or water in days, going to get himself out from under the ledge and then up and over the flue doors into the fireplace?

I was going to be gone all the next day but on my to do list? Call a chimney sweep! {In my head, I couldn't help but sing Chim-Chimery Chim Chim Cheroo...oh they don't make music like that anymore, do they?} In one last final attempt, we repositioned the flue in hopes that it would allow our little friend to escape.

Fast forward to this morning. The sun is just beginning to rise. Court is up, showered and buzzing about the house. I try to put myself back to sleep because for the first time in a loooong time, I have nothing on the agenda! {Suma-Summa time! Suma-time! I sing a lot in my head!}

Next thing I know, Court is standing beside me with a huge grin on his face! "Our little friend escaped...he's out of the chimney!" I'm groggy but I quickly get up. I walk out to the kitchen thinking I'm going to find a little sparrow hopping about and excited to reunite Tweety with the outside world.

Just as I reach the kitchen, I notice a LARGE, BLACK silhouette against our bay window in the living room. The sun is just coming up so the house is dark and the dawn is just breaking. The large, black object is completely out of place and I stop dead in my tracks. It swivels it's head like the chick possessed by the devil in The Exorcist to look at me and then...

I realize it is a huge, white, scary as all hell looking owl. AN OWL!! AN O-W-L! I have an owl in my living room!!!! Not only has the owl escaped from his sure to be tomb in the chimney, he has managed to get himself to the other side of the room and has perched himself on a ledge by our front door. Did he fly? Did he walk? How did we not hear this happen? How did our dogs not alert us to danger?

I didn't scream but I definitely panick as flashes of Man vs Wild came screeching across my brain (much like an angry screeching owl!). I retreat to the bedroom.

Both girls are still asleep. Thank God! Can you even imagine? But we still have a BIG owl in our LIVING room! As we discuss what to do next, the owl takes destiny in his own wings and flies into the window. Birds don't understand windows and we have birds careen into it ALL THE TIME! In fact, a few years ago, a small, baby, cute-as-a-button owl flew into our window (outside of course) and knocked itself silly. It sat on our porch in a stone-cold stupor for about five or six hours. Eventually, he flew away. (It couldn't be the same owl all grown up now, could it??!)

So the owl INSIDE our house goes flying into the window and falls to the floor. Now what?

The owl now sits about 10 feet from our front door. We NEVER use our front door. In fact, we pile up all the large toys - rocking horse, hopping ball, shopping cart, etc. in front of the door to get things out of the way. So the plan is for Court to go outside, unlock the front door from the outside and lure the owl outdoors. That should be easy enough, right?

Court is not quite ready to go outside. He needs a jacket and socks and shoes. It's raining and chilly and he probably needs some sort of armor in case he does get into some sort of physical altercation with the owl. It probably took Court less than five minutes to get himself ready for battle. But to me, it felt like an eternity. It must have felt that way to the owl too because before I can say Harry Potter, the owl has hopped across the floor - away from the front door - up onto the ledge of the fireplace, back through the chain fencing around the fireplace...and yes, folks...our owl friend is back in the fireplace! Not the chimney. The fireplace!

Court cautiously unlocks and opens the front door. He moves the toys and dining table out of the path of the owl. He kind of creates a little wall with our furniture so the owl only has one way to run fly. My mind is racing. Court has to leave in just a matter of minutes...he has to return his mom's car, which I borrowed the day before (long story - will explain later) so she can catch a plane! What am I going to do with two girls and an owl in the house?!?!

Heavy in thought, panic and disbelief, I see Court outside again fumbling around by the pool. He returns seconds later with a pool skimmer. He lowers the long rod so as not to frighten the poor owl who is now hopping up and down TRYING to get back into the chimney. With the fire poker, Court slides the chain fencing to the side so that there is nothing between us and the owl. Slowly, slowly, slowly, Court sticks the pool skimmer into the fireplace. He gently nudges the owl out from the corner of the fireplace, into the middle of the fireplace, then out on the ledge surrounding the fireplace. The owl is scared. He looks straight at Court and gives the most menacing, devil-like look, then turns his head and shudders in fear. This pattern repeats several times. Finally, the owl flops back down onto the floor. He spreads his wings awkwardly. Probably to maintain balance, possibly to make himself look more threatening but it also looks like one of his wings might be hurt.

Throughout all of this, I tried taking pictures with my iPhone as my other camera wasn't handy. Here is the only picture I got, but a picture I did get! Would you ever believe this story if there wasn't a picture to prove it?!

Moments later, Court was able to get the owl out the door. Immediately, without hesitation, the bird upon realizing it was outside took off and flew away. His wings obviously weren't hurt.

Needless to say, this went pretty smoothly. I mean who wakes up to an owl in their living room? Who has a playbook for that? But it could have been so much worse! Our bedroom doors are a matter of a few feet from the living room and they were all open. Can you imagine waking up to an owl in your bedroom?

Kiwi, our parrot, was perched on top of her cage. The starving owl could have had Kiwi for breakfast.

And what if our bark-at-everything-but-anything-of-significance dogs had seen the owl? They were both in our bedroom but neither are morning dogs so we were able to lock them in the bedroom before they even had a chance to realize what was going on. But what if the dogs had seen the owl? Started barking? Scared the owl into taking flight around the house? CAN. YOU. IMAGINE?

Way to go Court! You just earned yourself a waaaay better Father's Day gift than what I had originally planned.

Mexico 2012

Two weeks ago we were invited to join my parents and siblings in Mexico for our first family vacation in almost five years! And it was marvelous! Simply marvelous!

This is the view from our hotel restaurant. We could literally eat our meals with our feet in the sand...and eat with our feet in the sand we did!!

Unfortunately, my camera is dead so I relied on my brother and sister to capture our precious memories...especially since this was Grace and Charlotte's first time out of the United States.

Lots of people ask me about my stroller...

It was awesome on the cobble stone streets and narrow sidewalks. It is the UppaBaby Vista with the jump seat attachment.

Out at a dinner - the girls were troopers - a BIG thank you to the iPad! It has saved many-a-meal...especially when loaded with The Sound of Music!

With every family trip there is always some form of drama. Some sort of problem that has the possibility of destroying a vacation.
Enter The Black Gecko.

On a particularly long and hot outing I told Grace she could pick out a little special outing if she could just hang in there for a bit longer. We went to three different junk stores that all contained virtually the same thing and FINALLY she chose a gecko. A black, ceramic gecko.
An interesting choice but it was $5 and it made her happy. It saved the day!

Unfortunately, ceramic geckos aren't the sturdiest toy for a constantly jumping three year old. Against all warning of being careful that gecko, it was dropped and it broke. Small panic because the gecko hadn't left her side in 48 hours but when we told her we'd get a new one in the morning, that seemed to calm her nerves.

Fast forward to the next day. We miraculously found super glue. But you know how super glueing ceramic geckos can be....shotty at best?
So I decided to retrace my footsteps and find another black gecko just to be on the safe side.
My mom, dad and I went into almost every junk store within in a mile's distance from our hotel...which is A LOT! This little main street is LINED with them!
NONE OF THEM HAD A BLACK GECKO!
They had pink geckos and white geckos but no black geckos.
Are you kidding me?
Did Grace really choose the hardest to find item in all of Mexico?!
Apparently so!
Finally, like a McDonald's rising out of no where when all you have had to eat is weird foreign food (this has happened to me for reals and it is the BEST feeling ever!) we found the store that holds the monopoly on black geckos.
Can I get a hallelujah?
[On a side note, Grandpa treated the first black gecko in the gecko emergency room and guess what? He had a full recovery. So yes, we are now the owners of two black geckos!)

Brave Grace waited patiently in line to have her picture taken with two large macaws. Our favorite picture of Grace only features one parrot but you get the idea of how big and colorful the birds! She loved it!

On our very last night, we got all fancied up

and went out to a spectacular dinner at Punta Bonita.

We call this the Robot Family picture. I tried and tried to get the red eye out with a bunch of photo editing but to no avail. Robot Family it is!

The girls were good as gold at our very long dinner so as a reward they earned a brownie...

covered in M&Ms!!!

It was an awesome trip! Warm and relaxing!
Muchas gracias a mis padres!

SIDE NOTE: Grace juuuuust came up to me with no idea what I was writing about and with no prompt and said...."I want to go back to Mexico!"

Me too little girl...me too!

Blueberry Daze 2011

What a difference a year makes!!
Last year, Grace, Charlotte and I all attended the Blueberry Daze Festival BUT
Grace was too young to participate in most of the activities. She was 18 months old and Charlotte was still in my tummy with three months left to brew!
This year was quite different!!

Upon arrival, we warmed up with the petting zoo!
They had baby chicks, a calf and sheep.

The goats were REALLY friendly

the pigs were not.

Then it was off to the races...Grace was old enough to ride the ponies!! Yee haw!

(I thought the kids had to be three and was FULLY prepared to lie in order to get her on a horse but luckily she was the appropriate age so no sins were committed!)

Oh boy did she love that! I am still hearing about Wendy the pony!

After riding Wendy, she rode another horse named Henry.
Henry was a bit different...

Charlotte, not old enough to do anything, was pretty excited to watch her big sister undertake such big adventures!

What a trooper!

There is the little train...way out there in the U-Pick blueberry field.

Here they come on the home stretch...

They even had swings, live music, BBQ and stuff to buy!

A REALLY fun day!
What a fun way to ring in the 4th of July!!

Kittens, Candy and White Wine! Oh My!

We went to a 5th birthday party recently and boy was it fun! I now see why parents like having their children born during the warm summer months. Warm weather + lots of kids = shove them outside with toys and you've got a swingin' party!! (literally!)

Charlotte quickly found the slide. Grace, not wanting to be outdone by her baby sister, was in hot pursuit.

They then discovered one of five kittens sprinkled throughout the party asleep under the play set. Not the smartest spot for a cat to doze off during a birthday party BUT he did end up being the most laid back cat I've ever seen. I swear there was something in his catnip.

Days after the party Grace is still talking about the kitties! I'm telling you these were the best darn kittens EVER! They let every kid (or just my kid) tug on them,

carry them,

hold them,

and even flip them upside down! Like I said, they were amazing little kitties! (Not pictured - Grace Crodile-Hunter-style stalking down the kittens and grabbing them when the least expected it. I'm dead serious. The only thing she didn't do was yell out CRIKEY when one of the cats clawed it's way out of her arms, up her chest and then catapult off of her face.)

Charlotte required a little more hands-on attention during the party. She is at that tricky age where because she crawls she is at eye-view with every thing on the ground. She is all at that very tricky age where everything she see she puts in her mouth and tries to eat it. This is my least favorite stage of babyhood. VERY LEAST FAVORITE. All-nighter feedings, teething, when they push on your stomach about 30 seconds after you just gave birth (yeah no one tells you about the after-birth-stomach-pushing do they? Jerks. It's about a 100x worse than the actual delivery. Am I right?!) all rank much higher up on the scale for me. I hear about babies that go right from being blobs to walking - no crawling in the interim - and I seriously get jealous. Like give me Pippa Middleton's body jealous.

Crawling is cute at first - yay a milestone! - but that quickly evaporates, especially during the summer months when you are constantly outside fielding rocks and leaves out of your baby's mouth. I mean didn't she get the memo that I like to sit outside and drink white wine in the summer - uninterrupted of rock and leaf retrieving?! Oh well! Lucky for her she is stinkin' cute and happy (most of the time) to boot!

Great Grandma was a big help and gave me the use of two hands several times throughout the festivities!

I like how G.G. immediately gets her walking!
She knows what I'm talkin' about. Enough of this crawling nonsense.

There was even a pinata filled with candy!
Apparently, I'm gonna have to REALLY start pulling it together when it comes to this birthday party planning business.
It seems to me that 3-10 years olds aren't as easily entertained with some boxed wine, a remote and a couch as I am. (They'll learn...in 30 years or so.)

As the party festivities moved inside for dinner, presents and cupcakes, we founds ourselves thoroughly entertained in the playroom. (Did I mention they served white wine at this party? A+ in my book!) Grace discovered 'dressing up' - a completely new concept for her because I have not introduced any dress-up items (other than tutus). Why? I have no idea. I have clearly missed the boat on this one because she seriously loved the princess dresses. Ee will definitely be hitting up Santa for some royal attire this holiday season.

I choose the word 'attire' carefully because check out Grace scamming on the "big girl shoes" like they were Louboutins!!

In fact, after this party, we got LOTS and LOTS of great ideas for what Grandma and Grandpa Santa can bring the girls! Joking! kinda ;)
