4th of Puke-ly!

Last Thursday, I HAD to drive to Yakima just to pick up my new contacts. It was urgent as I had no backup contacts left and the contacts I was currently wearing were starting to tear. Like I said, it was urgent especially since their office would be closed Friday for 4th of July.

As it is summer and it is boiling hot, I figured some time spent in the air conditioned car would be a pleasant reprieve. So I loaded up the girls and drove 45 minutes to Tri-Cities to the gym. My plan being that post work out we would drive the 45 minutes back home plus another hour to Yakima, get my contacts, maybe grab lunch and then drive home. For those of you slow at math, that is 1.5 hours in the car post workout and then another hour post-contact-pickup for a grand total of 2.5 hours…just to pick up a box of contacts mind you!

Feeling grand after my workout, I went to pick up the girls from the Little Gym (what we call the gym's play center) and the "babysitter" told me Grace had been complaining of a stomach ache and that they were just about to come get me because she was asking to go home.

Hmmm….

Now it isn't that I didn't believe Grace that her stomach hurt, but I often find myself over-sympathizing with their ailments - keeping them home to rest, etc. only to find that they have miraculously been cured 30 minutes later. I figured a snack and a little "rest" in the car would be just what the doctor ordered!

So into the car we pile and start heading "upstream." Grace complains and refuses all of her favorite snacks. At about an hour and 20 minutes into the drive - well past the turnoff for home - she starts requesting that we go home RIGHT NOW and is squealing from time to time in pain.

Pushing the speed limit, I told Grace to hang on, that we were almost there and that we would be out of the car in no time. Just as I pulled into the parking lot of the eye clinic, she told me to hurry and I ran around to her side, opened her car door to her PUKING all over. Luckily, she is beyond awesome and managed to get all the puke outside the car!!

We sat outside a bit, drank some water and collected ourselves before going in grabbing the contacts and heading home. In hind sight, riding in the car with a child with a stomach issue was probably not my best decision.

This is where Grace posted up for the remainder of the day. I figured it would be a 24 hour thing like usual and we'd be up and at em the next day for the fourth of July.

No such luck.
All day. All night.
Then Charlotte came down with it too.

Mid-afternoon they seemed miraculously better. They were up and chatty so I figured the worst was over! We went swimming at Manna and Boppas house before a Family Fourth of July Feast!

These poses say it all! Cracks. Me. Up!!

Should have gotten pics of them BEFORE they swam in their blueberry dresses but once again
hindsight got the best of me.

Upon our return from our 4th of July evening, this guy showed up at our house!

He seemed starving, scared but so sweet. Of course no collar. People can really suck when it comes to caring for animals. Being a holiday weekend, there wasn't much we could do to help him other than give him a bit of food and water. Stranger and Hiccup took to him and kept his busy and 'Brown Dog' was my entertainment for the weekend as I watched him come and go through the windows…
but as of 2 in the morning on July 5…we were back in Flu-ville.

Both girls sick with "the throw-ups."

Saturday and Sunday. All day. This is where they were - the couch.
They slept on and off which was good but it meant they were really sick because they never sleep when the sun is up. Never!
They colored a bit. I once looked over and saw Charlotte doodling her name - all nine letters of it! She'd never done the whole thing without help before so that was the highlight of my 48 hours spent indoors cycling through laundry, dishes, blankets and sheets - you get the drift.
They watched E.T. for the first time which was a kick for me seeing Drew Barrymore at Charlotte's current age! Grace kept calling E.T. 'the robot' instead of an alien or an extra-terrestrial.

Finally, FINALLY, Monday rolled around and so did some stronger stomachs and some smiles. Our big outing of the day was grocery shopping.

They LOVED having their own carts. I was a bit worried that each of them in control of their own cart was going to be a recipe for disaster but it was actually awesome! All I kept thinking to myself was grocery shopping in just a few short years is going to be SO boring! I will most certainly miss these golden nugget moments throughout the day.

As it is pushing towards triple digits every afternoon, I took the girls swimming on Monday. I don't know what came over Charlotte but she just decided she was going to swim and that was that. She threw some rings in the pool and dove down and got them. Boom! Swam from one side of the pool to the other. Boom! She even jumped into the deep in and swam to edge without help! Check and mate! Fingers crossed I am laying pool side by the end of the summer - book in hand - and that my having-to-go-in-freezing-cold-public-pools-in-the-dead-of-winter days are over! Swim lessons start next week so things are looking pretty good in the recreational swimming department!

Ugh but back to reality. Woke up to this guy still here this morning. It was time to take some action. By days end, he was taken to a safe place that will try to reconnect him with his family or find him a new family. It was super said but I am so grateful that there are people and organizations dedicated to caring for animals in tough situations.

With that downer of a post ending, I will sign off wishing and hoping that this next week brings more laughter and smiles and less 'throw-ups!'

Ringing in 2014? Really? Already?

REALLY hard to believe that 2013 has come to an end.
2014? Wow! Time is not standing still and each year seems to go by faster and faster!

We've spent the last few days in Idaho - trying to slow things way down.

We took our annual sleigh ride. This year we planned ahead and made our reservation during daylight hours.

Not so cold. Not so hungry.

A little time to enjoy!
Time to enjoy a drink or two...

….time together as a family

…and time to enjoy the view.

New Year's Eve day we decided to play in the snow...

or lack there of.

Even with so little snow, we were able to sled, make snow angels and even make a snowman.
(My camera ran out of batteries five minutes into our snow adventure.)
It was a fun afternoon regardless of the snow level.

We had a quiet evening in to send off 2013.
Charlotte led the sleep brigade and I don't think anyone made it to twelve. At least I know I didn't!

I haven't yet reflected on 2013. I think I'm still recovering from Christmas.
While it felt like a "quick" year, I know each day was filled with love, hard work, appointments, commitments and family.
We moved. Grace had her surgery. We traveled a bit. Stranger and Hiccup joined our crew - as did the chickens. Sewing projects were completed. Birthdays celebrated. The girls started piano…

Full and fun.
I am so very grateful!

When I woke up this morning, I found these words of wisdom in my inbox.

As the year comes to an end and a new one lies ahead take time to: Cherish the words and memories of those who have left us. Embrace the sunrise. Marvel at the sunset. Wonder at the stars at night. Read. Look at the little things. Step back and take in the big picture. Give back. Be kind to yourself and others.  Do not count the days, make the days count. Treat your body well, good health requires effort. Never give up. Do something different.  Smile. Laugh at yourself. Respect others and yourself. Make new friends and reach out to old ones. Tell the ones you love, that you do.

Great words to kick off the new year, don't you think?

I wish you a Bountiful, Healthful and Happy 2014!

What the The Season is About

While several doctor appointments (not fun) and our niece's third birthday (fun) brought us to Seattle for a few days, we TRULY squeezed in as much fun into our time in Seattle. We managed to get together with our dear friends, Joe and Aimee, and their children for some cookie-decorating, pizza -eating, holiday fun!

We hadn't decorated cookies yet this season and it was soooo nice of Aimee to set up cookie decorating stations for each of the kids. They were all SO focused! I'm definitely going to have to ensure we have time each holiday season for cooking making! It was soo much fun!

It was nice to spend an evening with friends. Catching up and planning for more fun in the future.
After all, that is what the holidays are really about right?
Connecting and appreciating our friends and family!

Unfortunately, we had to call the evening a bit on the early side. We had a date with Santa in the morning!

Easter Celebration! {2013}

Our Easter celebration this year was in Boise
and my was it lovely!
I don't recall an Easter Sunday quite so warm and sunny!
I am really hoping spring has sprung and by that I mean I am hoping summer is around the corner.

We arrived mid-afternoon on Saturday with festivities in full swing!
Molly was in the process of making a feast! Lamb! Two kinds of potatoes! Baked Brie Bites! Asparagus tart! A coconut cheesecake! The food was delicious and what an amazing gift for her to cook for all of us!
Decorations galore! My mom even hung the new Easter wall hangings I made for her!
(I couldn't let a holiday go by without making decorations to display. On the five hour car ride, I made a bunny banner and some paper flowers. Didn't get pictures though.)

Everyone hit the hay pretty early that night and while Grace and Charlotte were quite aware that the Easter bunny was going to be making a visit no one anticipated a 5 am wake up call!

(Christmas is going to be a {insert expletive of your choice - I know what I've got floating around in my head and it might just rhyme with witch!) this year!

(Christmas is going to be a {insert expletive of your choice - I know what I've got floating around in my head and it might just rhyme with witch!) this year!

Miss Grace was excited and she was definitely awake! Luckily, she was convinced to stay in bed long enough to ensure that the bunny had hidden the eggs!

As the bunny had decided to hide the eggs outside this year, he waited until the last minute. Easter Bunny was living on the edge. Next year, the Easter Bunny better be a little bit more organized.

Charlotte slept like a rock until the sun came up and probably would've slept longer if Grace hadn't woken her up. In our haven't-had-a-cup-of-coffee-haze Grace snuck upstairs. No more waiting! It was time to get this party started!!

The Easter Bunny should also remember that just because it is 70+ during the day, it is still likely going to be in the 30s or 40s come sunrise.

And that stopped sleepyhead Charlotte in her tracks.

After two eggs, she declared herself done!

Meanwhile, Grace and Grandma were literally putting their heads together trying to figure out how the bunny got an egg up in the tree!

As a kid, I loved easter egg hunts and I never felt there were enough eggs.
(I now know why. Hard boiling and dying eggs with kids can be not a lot of fun. Sure, it's great for the first six eggs or so. But an Easter egg hunt with only six eggs frankly sucks. So we decorated two dozen plastic easter eggs for the Easter Bunny to hide.
Easily transportable? Check.
Kid friendly activity? Check.
Pretty easter colors? Check.

Convinced we still didn't have enough, I added another couple dozen to the mix.

Eggs! Eggs! Everywhere! Eggs!

Luckily, Grace and Charlotte had lots of helpers!

Eventually, all the eggs were scooped up and we could all head back into the house to defrost!

Time to see what the Easter Bunny left!

Grace was quick to discover the gifts the bunny brought!

While Charlotte was more fixated on the candy!

I made them each a peg doll family and house for Easter. I thought it was a cute little thing to make and wasn't expecting them to think much of it. But they LOVED having dolls "that looked like them!" I can't even tell you how many times Grace has shoved one of the peg people in my face and said, "Look, it's me! Look! It's Daddy!" It makes me feel good that even when they have access to iPads and cartoons, simple, homemade toys still make them happy!

Auntie Molly and Uncle Johnny-roo slipped in just about then and the Easter bunny had even brought them some goodies!

Grace was convinced that Johnny-roo needed help with his basket.

A few snuggles...

and a few pictures in our Easter finest.

Oh these girls!
There aren't words!

A fabulous brunch of filet mignon and béarnaise sauce (nice and light! ha!) we returned home to the grand finale!
The "adult" Easter egg hunt!

Yes, the Easter Bunny still likes to hide plastic eggs filled with money for us adults...Court included!
We each had 16 eggs to find for a total of 64 eggs.
All were hidden in three rooms and I am telling you,
if you hadn't known that there were five dozen eggs hidden somewhere in those rooms you would have never known.
To say they were well hidden well is a huge understatement.
It was like James Bond himself hid the eggs! All five dozen of them!
Oh how I wish I had taken pictures of some of the places the eggs were hidden.
But money, not to mention pride, was on the table!
No time for messing with cameras!

Stuffed in the cardboard roll of open paper towels in the back of a cabinet.
In the coffee grounds container.
In the cuckoo clock.
In a garbage bag in the garbage bag dispenser.
In my Mom's purse!

Twenty-four hours later, there are still 11 eggs missing!

Well played Easter Bunny. Well played.
