A Bird in the Nest is Worth...

Not exactly sure what that saying is or how it goes...but as you read along you'll get my point.

In recent months, the sleep habits of our girls has been, shall we say, less than desirable.
BOTH fight bed time.
BOTH want a story.
BOTH insist on having the lights on.
BOTH insist that I stay with them until they fall asleep.

This is the worst. Our house is old and therefore it creaks. A LOT. With every step. With every breath!
Charlotte has super sonic hearing because I'd have to literally sneak out of her room, holding my breath, and she'd still hear me, wake up in a panic, cry and then we'd have to start the whole thing over again.
I've been wanting to tear my hair out for months!!

And if that wasn't bad enough, at about 11:23, little Charlotte Katherine (as she prefers to be called) wakes up out of the blue, walks downstairs directly to my side of the bed, says hi mom and crawls into our bed.

The first few times she did this, we thought it was cute and endearing. We aren't co-sleepers and don't believe in it. But there was something sweet about waking up and hearing Charlotte's heavy breathing or feeling her snuggle up in the middle of the night.
Throw in the fact that we've all been off and on sick over the last couple of months or traveling, we were willing to do whatever it took to get some uninterrupted sleep.

And there lies our first (millionth?) mistake.
We didn't make the effort to correct it then and there.
Therefore, we created a monster.
A sweet, charming, darling monster.

But a monster nonetheless.
Her innocent breathing became snores.
Her precious snuggles became kicks and slaps.

We decided enough was enough and we were going to take a stand.

We were going to get our bed back!

When she came down at 11:23 like a moth to flame, I took her right back up to her room.
She cried. She got right back up.
Over and over and over again.
Finally, I stayed with her until she fell asleep.
The floor creaked as I left her room.
Curse that creaky floor!!
Of course, she woke up.

Eventually, I ended up in her bed with her until she fell deeply asleep.
Then I left. I'm not going to even tell you how long that took nor am I going to share how many times we repeated this process in the middle of the night.
I'm just going to say that by 6 am the next morning, both girls were in our bed and I clocked in less sleep than if I'd had a newborn.

MAJOR FAIL!

(This might have thrown me into I-don't-think-I-can-have-another-baby column...I think I'm officially too old for sleepless nights...let alone a year of them!!)

So when out of the blue the other night, Grace wanted to make a nest of blankets on her floor and sleep in it like a bird, we were a bit hesitant at first. Do we need her making sleep problems for herself? Don't we have enough? Should we correct this before it even starts?

We decided to roll the dice.

In the middle of the night, as I am in the middle of night two of retraining Charlotte to sleep in her own bed, it dawned on me!

Why not put Charlotte in Grace's bed?!

When I posed the option to Charlotte, she couldn't run fast enough to Grace's bedroom. She climbed in, snuggled up and was asleep in five seconds!

It was a small miracle!

A few weeks ago we dragged Charlotte's mattress from upstairs into Grace's room so that they could sleep together. It didn't work.
Something about the nest was magic!

Grace in her self-made nest.

Snug as a bug bird.

And this one? Out cold.
All. Night. Long.

And while I should feel bad that one of my children is sleeping on the floor,
I am 'sleeping' on it. (pun intended! ha!)
Because a bird in the nest is worth one in the hay? In the bush?
Seriously, what is that saying?!?!

Regardless, we are running with this as long as it works.
Now that I've posted this, I am sure the nest's magical powers will disappear.
Until then....

Sleep Wanted and More Vacay Pics

On my Costco run this morning I noticed that the 'Burban is just about to hit a major milestone.

Dreading what kind of service is required at a 100,000 miles.

In other news, sleep, bedtime and nap time, have become an epic battle around here.
Not sure if the girls haven't readjusted to our time zone or what but I am pretty sure I am going to lose my mind if I don't get this nipped in the bud ASAP!

Both girls have suddenly developed a fear of the dark and a hatred of bedtime. Charlotte used to run to her room when I said it was bedtime. Now she'll go up to her room only if I promise to "rock her." So we read stories, we rock and she gets tucked in. Then the waterworks start. Hysterical tears because she wants me to stay with her until she falls asleep. The first few times this happened, I obliged, and she fell asleep in two minutes. It has evolved into a two hour ordeal.
If I leave, she cries or sneaks out of her room while I am getting Grace ready for bed. If I leave after she's asleep she has some sixth sense and wakes up as I am stealthily creeping out of her room.
Then the process starts all over again.

Meanwhile, Grace wants me to stay with her until she falls asleep (which to her benefit takes about 30 seconds). So you can see how this is not only time consuming and exhausting, but it is really cutting into the time Court and I have to talk, catch-up on each others days or to discuss anything important.

In the last few days, I've tried skipping Charlotte's nap thinking that way she'll be REALLY ready to sleep at bedtime. The first day it worked perfectly and I was so happy with myself that I'd finally figured this out. Grace went to bed just minutes later and Court and I had an entire evening to ourselves. The first in AGES!
The next night, it was back to the same mess and yesterday, while I was making dinner, she fell asleep on the couch.

Of course, the late nap threw bed time off even more. It took her so long to fall asleep that I fell asleep in her room while waiting for her to fall asleep!!

I humbly beg for any thoughts or advice to make this situation better.
Probably gonna have to have a few cry it out nights, huh?
UGH! I hate those!

Anyway, let's try to end this with a few happy, warm thoughts especially since a horrible wind advisory in effect at the moment. I know wind isn't nearly as bad as the amount of snow that has been dumped on the east coast this winter, but it is horrible in it's own way. Regardless, we are trapped in doors. So on with the pics!

We spent an entire day exploring the north side of the island. It was beautiful, green and definitely made us want to watch Blue Hawaii and Jurassic Park! ha!

Pretty sure that Halele'a is the place they speak of in the song Puff the Magic Dragon.

Do you see the kayaker in the picture above?

Do you recognize this cottage?

Or this one?

I'll give you a hint. Both were in a recent movie with an actor that rhymes with Schmorge Schooney.

They are located around this little bay - apparently THE surf spot for locals!

We got out and watched the surfers! As I like looking at the ocean much more than being in it, I was surprised that I had the sudden urge to learn to surf.

We took our lunch break at the St. Regis where we were treated to some amazing views...

and a pretty sensational brunch!

It was a beautiful old hotel that really capitalized on its views!

The main chandelier in the lobby caught my eye. I thought it looked like a school of jellyfish.
(Do jellyfish swim in schools?!?!)

Grace was in a fantastic mood and being so silly.

Charlotte was an absolute angel!

It truly was a vacation day well spent!

Sneaky Charlotte

She snuck into our bed sometime in the middle of the night!
I didn't know she was there until I woke up this morning!

Thanksgiving Eve {2012}

We hosted Thanksgiving again this year which we LOVE doing!
Everyone arrived on Wednesday and it was a very relaxed day - a little prep in the kitchen, a few errands - and then off to dinner!
We ate out which probably helped make it a relaxed day!
Grace and Charlotte were so excited to have their grandparents, aunt and uncle in town!

All these years I have battled Grace over bedtimes and nap times. The kid just never wants to sleep!

That is, until we go out to dinner!
Can you tell we don't get out much? ha!

Nothing like an hour car ride to lull the little ones into a dead sleep! Too bad the grocery store and all other errands can't be done by hitting a drive thru. My life would be waaayyy different!

She eventually woke up...

Ahh yes! There is the Grace we know and love!

Luckily, I had planned for the girls to be a bit restless at dinner.
The iPad of course!
(Don't leave home without it!)

But I also found patterns for some quiet activities for the girls to do at the table.

A few pieces of cut felt and the girls occupied themselves by feathering turkeys and adding foliage to naked trees.

It was a fun, fantastic and most importantly relaxing dinner with my family.
The wine flowed, the steaks were cooked to perfection and the dessert was so good we ordered a second! Nothing like eating light the day before the biggest meal of the year!

Onto the cooking!

Solo Slumber Party

Court is out of the town for a few days so I've moved my sewing machine to the kitchen table. I have A LOT to get done! In the next five weeks, we have one anniversary, Thanksgiving and three birthdays! All but one we are hosting! So busy is an understatement! (Oh yeah...and Christmas is right after all this hoopla!)

When Court is out of town, meals get REALLY simple and cleaning doesn't happen. It's the closest thing a housewife gets to a vacation! So in those moments I typically would be cleaning or cooking, while Court is away I sew!

Grace seeing that I was posting up at the kitchen table for the evening (which is in the living room) she decided to transport her bed into the living room. She quietly read books, put on her princess dress and sparkle shoes and ran around the house casting spells. When asked what her spells were about, she said she was trying to make Barbies appear.

She is obsessed with Barbies! Loves them!
I have LOTS of friends who are anti Barbie. That they hurt your self esteem, create unattainable expectations of beauty, blah blah blah.
I don't buy it.
Barbie is a doll. Barbie is pretend.
The End.

Anyway, I was planning on making it a late night but I quickly realized I was more tired than I thought when I sewed an entire piece inside out requiring the entire thing to be re-done!
Upset at my mistake, I decided to pack it in and hit the hay!
There is nothing worse than sewing when tired. All sorts of BAD mistakes happen! Time consuming to fix mistakes...and who has time for that? Especially at this time of the year!

When I told Grace I was heading to bed, she asked me to read a few stories and that was that!
A few minutes later, I came out to check on her and she was sound asleep!
Her first solo on the floor in the living room!

I have a feeling Santa might have a harder time filling stockings this year!

One of These "Kids" Just Doesn't Belong Here

Court called me into Grace's room the other night.

When I walked in, this is all I saw.
Grace's MO.
Lots of blankets followed by a ridiculous amount of stuff animals, toys and books piled high wide.
To the point you don't think she'll be able to find a spot for herself to sleep.

I fought this battle - tried to get all the toys and animals out of her bed (figured the books can stay...yay reading!) - but clearly I lost.

(At this point in the game, she could be sleeping in a tank full of sharks and as long
as she sleeps through the night and wakes up alive, I am pretty much cool with it.)

I digress.

Court kept giving me a big, goofy grin so I figured there must be an owl loose in the house...again.

He told me to look closer. So I did.

Apparently, she makes room for real animals too!

Lucky Pup IS lucky pup!

Big Weekend

Family over for dinner on Friday. Dinner with more family on Saturday night and a Halloween party on Monday! Busy, busy, busy! I didn't know how I was going to get everything done! There was decorating, and cooking and baking...oh my!...to do. But then, this little miracle happened.

Grace climbed into bed with Daddy - who was already napping - and fell asleep all on her own volition.
No prompting, no pleading and no bribing.
I looked up from a pile of cookies yet to be frosted and thought "uh oh!" The house is awfully quiet...that can only mean one thing. But I was wrong. Soooo wrong! Nothing could have made me happier!
The house was quiet. Everyone was sleeping. I had two hands AND my mind all to myself!
I happily and quickly plowed through the cupcakes and cookies needing frosting and thoroughly enjoyed every second!
