Early Picks

Our new house is located caddy corner from an apple orchard!
Oh yeah!! (Said in Vector's voice if you've seen Despicable Me!!)
We've anxiously been waiting for apple picking season...and finally picked a few the other evening.

Unfortunately, we are still a wee bit early. When these babies come online though...watch out!!
I'm banking on the plethora we pick to keep the proverbial doctor away for a looooong time.
I think we are due for a dry run on the doctor front.

Backyard Magic

The Memorial Day weekend celebration starts for us tomorrow. We are heading to Sun Valley with some friends for some food and fun with all of our kids.
(We'll be traveling with a 4, 3, 2 and 1 year old! Should be interesting!!)

When the rain started at Grace's park party, it didn't stop until the next day! The skies parted for just a few minutes so I quickly put the girls rain boots on and took a break from packing for the weekend!

This wasn't the weather I was expecting to kick off summer.

But the rain left behind huge, magnificent puddles.

Perfect for rock throwing...

exploring...

and jumping!

Charlotte prepared - both mentally and physically - for her jumps!

I spotted two nests while the girls ran around!

Nothing like outside-backyard-fun.
Nothing like home.
Nothing like Home Place.

Only a month or so left of this view.
*sigh*
Bittersweet.

Look Hoo's Back!

You may recall our run in with an owl - in our living room - last year. You might also recall how that same owl raised a nest of baby owls in a tree right outside our living room window. Read about it here and here. It was amazing. I enjoyed every second of watching them peak out of their hole and cautiously and clumsily take to flight.

Then, just like that, they were gone. Grown up and gone and we were empty nesters. Literally.

My evening owl entertainment left a void in my evening repertoire. Even knowing that the owls wouldn't be there, I'd check every once in a while just in case.

So imagine my surprise when I posted up on the couch Tuesday night to fold heaps of laundry and relax in front of the 'boob tube'. Court was at a dinner meeting, the girls were asleep so I was settling in for some me time. Just me, the laundry and the ...and just like last time, I could feel the eyes upon me. I swear I knew she was there even before I looked up. She met my stare with confidence - unblinking - and for the second time in just days, I cried.

The owl - other than bringing the girls home and watching them grow - has been one of my most cherished memories of this house and I wanted to see her one more time before we moved.

Yes, you are reading that correctly. We are moving - soon - though I don't know exactly when. There are still a lot of unknowns and variables. The good news is we know where! More on all that when the time is right...and I actually know something.

The move is bittersweet. The main thing the move does for us is that it gets the girls in a better school district. It also puts us closer to Court's office thus shortening his commute. The down side is we are leaving the house that was our first home. We lived in a house prior to this one but it wasn't a home. There's a difference ya know. This is where the girls came home from the hospital, where we endured sleepless nights and 18 months of all-day pregnancy sickness. It's where we hosted family gatherings and where I cooked my first Thanksgiving meal. It's where we lit off firecrackers three weeks post 4th of July and where we roasted marshmallows with friends in the driveway. It's where the girls learned to crawl, walk, swim and ride bikes. It's the only home Grace and Charlotte have ever known.

While this is the only house Grace and Charlotte have ever known, they aren't the only children to be raised in this house. Court's father, uncle and aunt all grew up here. This house has been inhabited by a family member for 63 years and upon our departure, the tenure ends. *Sigh.* Like I said, bittersweet.

But life is ever changing and change, whether difficult or waited for with baited breath, is good. I look forward to our new house and the process of making that place our home. (The girls and I have been listening to Phillip Phillips a lot lately! 😜)

So seeing the owl flooded me with a lot of emotions. We quietly sat and watched each other for quite sometime - although I wonder if she wasn't watching the muted tv screen glowing behind me. She couldn't have been that transfixed on me.

Then again, perhaps she came to say goodbye. To give a nod of thanks for rescuing her from the chimney and in turn saving the lives of her owlets. (I checked. The proper term for a baby owl.) For she has not returned since Tuesday. Every night, I check and wait. I'm content that even if I don't see her again before our transplant we had one final moment. One final goodbye. Truth be told, I'll be looking for her every night even after we move.

UPDATE: I'm Up to My Eyeballs in Crap! Literally!

While sitting outside watching the girls play, I hit the publish button on my last post. It is still on the chilly side here so I ran into the house to get a sweater. We'd been outside for about 45 minutes.  Lindey too! Charlotte immediately announced she wanted to put on a diaper. She's been wearing panties so I immediately knew something was wrong so I scooped her up and quickly ran to the bathroom. She had soiled her underpants. Two steps forward and one back apparently. She'd already had several successful trips to the potty today! But that is why they call it potty training. We cleaned her up and put a diaper back on her because that is what she wanted. And as I headed back outside - sweater in hand - to enjoy some spring sunshine and fresh air, you'll never believe what I came across.

Another Lindey turd! Come on!

I'm Up to My Eyeballs in Crap! Literally!

So this is gonna be a stream of conscious/bullet point kind of post. I have a lot on my to-do list and even more on my I-want-to-do-list. Sometimes, I get so overwhelmed in my few moments of free time, I try to do everything all at once and of course, get nothing done. How does anyone organize their time when there is no real way to organize it?!?

I already get up at 5 am - I've even bumped that up to 4:45 so that I can try to squeeze in some time where I can focus on just one thing - be it answering emails, cleaning something or just a few minutes to myself to merely surf the web. Yes, I have to schedule my down time - especially if that down time happens to be on the computer. I don't want Grace and Charlotte on the computer all day, everyday so it is only fair that I practice what I preach. The problem is that these days our lives are on the computer! From paying bills, organizing photos, researching anything and finding recipes. Even when I am "on the computer" I'm usually not on the computer in a frivolous way. I'm not Facebooking or Tweeting or gaming. I don't know any other way to put it...but I am working. Be it planning meals or preserving memories or scheduling activities for the kids. So if I'm not supposed to be on the computer when I am supposed to get all this stuff done?!?!

Speaking of getting stuff done, today I have done nothing but clean up sh*t. I'm serious. I woke up extra early to work on gathering and organzing information for a meeting I had today (more on that later). I wanted to get it all done before the girls woke so I could pull my thoughts together without being interrupted. When I went into the kitchen for my morning cup of coffee, I was greeted with dog crap all over my living room. And when I say all over...I mean ALL. OVER.

I should have known better than to let Lindey have free reign of the house last night. We had quite the day yesterday! I kind of have to backtrack with the story. Grace and Charlotte went to sleep like a dream last night! But my God! They should have! They went to gymnastics, accompanied me to the grocery store where we had to stock up on everything (it was the grocery store run after being on vacation so we needed everything!), hit the park in horrible, gusting winds, took shelter in the library and finally, picked up the dogs from the groomer. Oh the groomer! Here is where the story gets back on track. As I was paying and chatting with the store owner, I could hear the girls start that high pitch, whiney sound they make whenever I try to talk to an adult in their presence.  I, of course, kept chatting, giving the girls the one-finger, behind-the-back wave. (While other mothers were teaching their babies sign language for words like 'milk' and 'more', I was teaching signs for "Knock it off!!" and "I'm warning you."Much more practical if I do say so myself.

As the conversation ended, I turned to leave, gathering up the dogs and kids, which is always a shit show on a good day. And then. There it was. The reason for Grace and Charlotte's freakout - legitimate freakout - I might add.

Lindey decided it was the perfect time to have explosive diarea. All over. I will spare the gory details but we made it out without anyone stepping in it. A small miracle as the groomer graciously offered to clean it up. I swear. I can't go anywhere. ANYWHERE I tell you!!

So like I said, I should have known better than to let Lindey sleep anywhere but the "whole" - the little laundry room/dog kennel - last night. At 5 am this morning, while normal people were sleeping, I spent 45 minutes cleaning up Lindey's messes. Awesome.

And when I got back from my meeting today, guess what kind of surprise was waiting for me? Yep! More dog crap! So I let Lindey outside for an hour while I cleaned everything up and got the girls squared away with lunch.

When Lindey has been allowed in the house today, she has been on total lockdown. Allowed only in the "whole." It is now 3 pm and she has been in and out of the whole (only to go outside) since 1 pm. In those two hours, she has sh*t twice - IN THE HOUSE!! I'm telling you, I am about to lose my mind.

Throw in the peanut butter mess that Charlotte made today during snack time - epic! - and the fact that she is potty training and you get the gist. I'm literally up to my eyeballs in crap!!

While I am bouncing from one mess to the other, all I can think about is what I am not getting done! I have fabric all cut out waiting to be sewn together. I have several other projects I want to tackle. There are some things I need to dig in and research. I'd like to upload my photos from vacation. I'd like to share more of my stories and thoughts here. I'd like to get my hair cut and get a pedicure. I'd like to workout on a somewhat consistent basis. And while it sounds crazy, I want to get the plans for Grace and Charlotte's birthdays underway because I have a feeling this summer is simply going to get away from me for reasons I don't think I quite have the words yet to explain. I just don't know how to do it. I don't know how to get it all done. I don't know how to teach and nurture Grace and Charlotte all while getting things crossed off my to-do list!

I guess the only thing to do is move everything to tomorrow's to-do list and see what happens!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In other news, we have another bird nest to report. This year, a Killdeer has nested in our backyard! (If you've been following along you know that an owl nested in our yard last year and the year before that...come to think of it, we've had a bird build a nest in our yard every spring since we moved here!)
See her there on her nest amongst the oh-so-natural pink flags?
We're hoping the flags will keep the garbage truck guy from running over the nest.
Aren't the eggs amazing?
They look like rocks!!
And I was able to catch a few photos of these two deep in conversation.
I love that they can now sit and talk to each other.
Unfortunately, most of those conversations end in someone crying.
Ooo That Smell...Can't You Smell That Smell?
All summer my car has been a bit smelly.
Smelly to the point of embarrassing.
I've cleaned it.
I've taken it to the car wash.
Yet the smell lingered.
Charlotte likes to spray her bottles everywhere so I assumed it was sour milk hidden in the crooks and crannies of the car seat.
Almost.
Today, I cleaned the car. It was the same ole same ole.
Spend an hour cleaning it while the girls sit up front pretending to drive taking breaks only to dig through my change drawer. I think they are the only two humans on the planet who squeal at the sight of a penny.
Just as I announced I was all done, I discovered -out of no where - rocks right where I had just vacuumed!!
I *wonder* how they got there.
(Seriously, this is why I never clean as often and as well as I should. It's pointless. As soon as one mess is addressed, a hundred others have sprouted.)
As I climbed all over the car, on my hands and knees,
I came across the culprit.
A bottle.
Under Grace's car seat.
UUUUGGGHHHHH!
Now you might be asking:
"Now Katie, that bottle looks pretty obvious to me! How could you have missed it? I mean, it is yellow and it clearly stands out against the cave-like interior of your car?"
Good question.
While it looks obvious in this picture, I assure you it wasn't.
I was down on my stomach pointing my camera up to get an angle where you could see the bottle under the seat. In the routine entry and exits of the car, you'd never see it.
Only if you were on the ground looking up and call me crazy but that isn't part
of our routine.
But there she is.
Curdled, rotting milk in all her glory.
A good way to end summer, no?
Backyard to the Future
This is our back yard. It far from perfect but...
it's perfect for bike riding...
...flower picking...
and maybe a horse or two.
Someday.
It's the perfect place for kids.
And I can't imagine leaving it.
The future is a bit uncertain at the moment which keeps me in a constant state of "unsettled."
Constant unsettledness is exhausting.
I'm sure you've been there. Who hasn't?
And if you haven't, don't worry. You will.
(Apparently, it's also called being an adult.)
What if we did this? What if we did that?
It's pointless to wonder. In the end, it will work out.
It HAS to. There is too much riding on it.
But in the mean time, we will literally be stopping and smelling the flowers until a decision is made.
Probably about three of four times a day in fact!
You'll Never Believe This
Earlier this week, Court kept saying he heard noises coming from the fireplace. I completely dismissed him. What could possibly be in the fireplace?
Again and again, he kept saying he heard a something - a bird - to be precise. Finally, a few days later, I heard it too!
We immediately got a flash flight and started looking up the dark chimney. We didn't know what to do. How do you get a bird out of a chimney? Better question, how does a bird get into a chimney?
We decided to adjust the flue in a way that might allow the bird to escape into the empty fireplace. We pulled the chain 'fencing' closed so our 'friend' wouldn't be able to fly all around the house and hoped for the best.
The next evening, Court, hearing the bird again, decided to check on our 'little friend.' This time Court saw the bird! The bird was perched in an awkward way and if persuaded a bit in a certain direction, could be freed. So up went a poker into the flue, into the chimney to do some 'persuading'.
The poker did nothing but frighten poor 'Tweety Bird' back into the depths of the chimney. We were certain that he had fallen down behind the flue doors and we both realized that this was probably the end. How was a tiny bird, who hadn't had food or water in days, going to get himself out from under the ledge and then up and over the flue doors into the fireplace?
I was going to be gone all the next day but on my to do list? Call a chimney sweep! {In my head, I couldn't help but sing Chim-Chimery Chim Chim Cheroo...oh they don't make music like that anymore, do they?} In one last final attempt, we repositioned the flue in hopes that it would allow our little friend to escape.
Fast forward to this morning. The sun is just beginning to rise. Court is up, showered and buzzing about the house. I try to put myself back to sleep because for the first time in a loooong time, I have nothing on the agenda! {Suma-Summa time! Suma-time! I sing a lot in my head!}
Next thing I know, Court is standing beside me with a huge grin on his face! "Our little friend escaped...he's out of the chimney!" I'm groggy but I quickly get up. I walk out to the kitchen thinking I'm going to find a little sparrow hopping about and excited to reunite Tweety with the outside world.
Just as I reach the kitchen, I notice a LARGE, BLACK silhouette against our bay window in the living room. The sun is just coming up so the house is dark and the dawn is just breaking. The large, black object is completely out of place and I stop dead in my tracks. It swivels it's head like the chick possessed by the devil in The Exorcist to look at me and then...
I realize it is a huge, white, scary as all hell looking owl. AN OWL!! AN O-W-L! I have an owl in my living room!!!! Not only has the owl escaped from his sure to be tomb in the chimney, he has managed to get himself to the other side of the room and has perched himself on a ledge by our front door. Did he fly? Did he walk? How did we not hear this happen? How did our dogs not alert us to danger?
I didn't scream but I definitely panick as flashes of Man vs Wild came screeching across my brain (much like an angry screeching owl!). I retreat to the bedroom.
Both girls are still asleep. Thank God! Can you even imagine? But we still have a BIG owl in our LIVING room! As we discuss what to do next, the owl takes destiny in his own wings and flies into the window. Birds don't understand windows and we have birds careen into it ALL THE TIME! In fact, a few years ago, a small, baby, cute-as-a-button owl flew into our window (outside of course) and knocked itself silly. It sat on our porch in a stone-cold stupor for about five or six hours. Eventually, he flew away. (It couldn't be the same owl all grown up now, could it??!)
So the owl INSIDE our house goes flying into the window and falls to the floor. Now what?
The owl now sits about 10 feet from our front door. We NEVER use our front door. In fact, we pile up all the large toys - rocking horse, hopping ball, shopping cart, etc. in front of the door to get things out of the way. So the plan is for Court to go outside, unlock the front door from the outside and lure the owl outdoors. That should be easy enough, right?
Court is not quite ready to go outside. He needs a jacket and socks and shoes. It's raining and chilly and he probably needs some sort of armor in case he does get into some sort of physical altercation with the owl. It probably took Court less than five minutes to get himself ready for battle. But to me, it felt like an eternity. It must have felt that way to the owl too because before I can say Harry Potter, the owl has hopped across the floor - away from the front door - up onto the ledge of the fireplace, back through the chain fencing around the fireplace...and yes, folks...our owl friend is back in the fireplace! Not the chimney. The fireplace!
Court cautiously unlocks and opens the front door. He moves the toys and dining table out of the path of the owl. He kind of creates a little wall with our furniture so the owl only has one way to run fly. My mind is racing. Court has to leave in just a matter of minutes...he has to return his mom's car, which I borrowed the day before (long story - will explain later) so she can catch a plane! What am I going to do with two girls and an owl in the house?!?!
Heavy in thought, panic and disbelief, I see Court outside again fumbling around by the pool. He returns seconds later with a pool skimmer. He lowers the long rod so as not to frighten the poor owl who is now hopping up and down TRYING to get back into the chimney. With the fire poker, Court slides the chain fencing to the side so that there is nothing between us and the owl. Slowly, slowly, slowly, Court sticks the pool skimmer into the fireplace. He gently nudges the owl out from the corner of the fireplace, into the middle of the fireplace, then out on the ledge surrounding the fireplace. The owl is scared. He looks straight at Court and gives the most menacing, devil-like look, then turns his head and shudders in fear. This pattern repeats several times. Finally, the owl flops back down onto the floor. He spreads his wings awkwardly. Probably to maintain balance, possibly to make himself look more threatening but it also looks like one of his wings might be hurt.
Throughout all of this, I tried taking pictures with my iPhone as my other camera wasn't handy. Here is the only picture I got, but a picture I did get! Would you ever believe this story if there wasn't a picture to prove it?!
Moments later, Court was able to get the owl out the door. Immediately, without hesitation, the bird upon realizing it was outside took off and flew away. His wings obviously weren't hurt.
Needless to say, this went pretty smoothly. I mean who wakes up to an owl in their living room? Who has a playbook for that? But it could have been so much worse! Our bedroom doors are a matter of a few feet from the living room and they were all open. Can you imagine waking up to an owl in your bedroom?
Kiwi, our parrot, was perched on top of her cage. The starving owl could have had Kiwi for breakfast.
And what if our bark-at-everything-but-anything-of-significance dogs had seen the owl? They were both in our bedroom but neither are morning dogs so we were able to lock them in the bedroom before they even had a chance to realize what was going on. But what if the dogs had seen the owl? Started barking? Scared the owl into taking flight around the house? CAN. YOU. IMAGINE?
Way to go Court! You just earned yourself a waaaay better Father's Day gift than what I had originally planned.
I Just Wanna Stay Home
Last week, I checked out a new gym. I had both girls with me so I decided to show them the child care area. It was REALLY clean awesome! Charlotte had to be pried away from all the smiling strangers ready, willing and able to to play with her. Grace on the other had was a bit skeptical. She only wanted to play if "Mommy comes too!"
I explained that if we were to come here all together Grace and Charlotte would enter the play area and Mommy would be in that big room over there full of all the death machines.
"I want to come with Mommy!"
No, they don't let big girls in that room. Just Mommies....so do you want to come hang out here with Charlotte?
"Mmmmmm....No, I just wanna stay home."
What?!? Are you like 72 years old?
Fast forward to today. Dress and ready Grace for ballet. Wake Charlotte UP from her nap!! {DISLIKE!} Brave an epic wind storm to get to the dance studio on time. Miss Nicole asks all her ballerinas to join her on the floor....
Tears. Epic. Massive tears. We huddled in the corner and watched for a few minutes to see if she would warm up to the idea. Nope.
Then I tried dragging her out there and handing her off to Miss Nicole. Major fail.
Then we did another family huddle in the back room...all while Charlotte is crawling and kicking and karate-chop-kung-fuing her way out of my arms to go out with the ballerinas.
No amount of convincing or bribing could change Grace's mind. Noticing that we were bothering the other parents and students, I piled the girls and headed home.
MAJOR FAIL.
Grace, what's the matter? Don't you want to dance with all the girls?
Through tears and sobs and hiccups....No I just wanna stay home.
Oh. My. You are your mother's daughter.
*Auntie Molly will REALLY appreciate this post! ;)
