Busy Fingers

We had a nice, quiet, relaxing weekend at home. Everyone slept in. Except me. 

While everyone else slept, I woke up with a cup of coffee, my audible book (I've been reading up a storm since I've started listening to books instead of reading them) and some sewing. I am knee-deep in Christmas sewing…in March!! I think I am finally starting early enough!! hahah. Except…Easter is quickly approaching and the Easter Bunny and I have yet to establish a plan. 

Moment after I took the picture above - feeling all smug that I have kids that now sleep in and I can actually enjoy a Saturday morning - Grace woke up. *sigh* It was nice while it lasted!

We did some Kiwi Crate projects - these were a big hit! Believe it or not, they turned basketball into an art project and it has been a total WINNER! (Side note: St. Patrick's Day is next week and yes I do decorate - just a smidge for good luck!)

We recently added a typing program to our computer so the girls could learn to type. I figure it is a lot like playing the piano and if nothing else it helps them with their letters and spelling. Grace is hooked!

Charlotte is determined not to be left behind.

After a leisurely morning, the girls and I got dolled up to go out to lunch with their Dad. Both Grace and Charlotte picked out their own outfits AND got their first makeup lesson. So girly. So fun. They loved it! Needless to say, we were a bit late for lunch!! 

And with that, we set our clocks an hour ahead and obligingly sprang into spring!! Hope you had a great weekend and have adjusted to the time change! We are still working on it.

**Just so you know, if there are ever elections for queen, you should vote for me because my platform would involve making three day weekends standard and getting rid of this "pain is the arse" clock changing ritual!**

Horsing Around

It was beautiful here this past weekend! It was record-setting temperatures that soared clear into the 90's!!

We took full advantage and tried to get outdoors as much as possible.

On Saturday, we went to a local farm that opened up to celebrate spring. The orchards were in full bloom and the ponies were hitched up and ready for rid in'. Yee haw!

Rumor on the street is that Grace's picture is one of the local papers riding good ole Windy here.

I have yet to track it down.

Then we made a few bird feeders. 

Grace enjoyed lining up the cheerios while Charlotte was super helpful and ate our leftover supplies.

It's been fun watching the birds from our dining room table as we eat dinner.

While our pool is officially opened, it is still chemically imbalanced and extremely cold so we opted for the sand box and water table as our outdoor entertainment for the weekend.

I am faaaaar from bathing suit ready! UGH! 

  

 

Cooler temps along with thunderstorms are headed our way. As a farmer's wife I'm not supposed to enjoy  thunder and lightning storms but I do! Shhhh, that'll be our little secret!

Signs of Spring

Charlotte's tree started blooming over the weekend. It is gorgeous...

From far away, it still has some filling out to do!

In other news, we planted our garden...

using very "high-tech-tools" to mark our crops.

This is the earliest we've every gotten the garden planted...we learned our lesson last year. 

We hope to have zucchinis, squash, pumpkins, carrots and green onions.

Fingers crossed!

First Bike Ride of 2011

It is still freezing out. It rained and thundered all weekend. So much so that the nearby rivers are cresting. Not a good weekend to be a farmer...or married to one for that matter. So naturally, I took the girls for a bike ride this morning to mind-over-matter the fact that it isn't any closer to spring than it was 4 weeks ago. 

Grace and Charlotte had the 'easy' task of sitting - together - in the bike trailer with blankets and toys.

It was a bit chilly, my legs were a little rusty, I had to stop three times to help 'keep the peace' in the bike trailer, but all in all, it was a success!!

Farming 101

It rained A LOT last night.

(Definition of A LOT: Aaaa Looooooottttttt)

It thundered too.

A LOT.

When the clouds parted for a few minutes this morning, we took Grace outside. All the rain from the night before ousted the worms in our front yard. A LOT of worms. 

See above definition...there were A LOT of worms!!

I was so thankful they were worms and not snakes.

Anyway, the appearance of SO many worms prompted Grace's first farming lesson.

Poop = fertilizer

Worms poop.

Poop is fertilizer.

Fertilizer grows crops.

Highly sophisticated stuff but she was enthralled - with the worms that is.

She definitely has the makings of a farmer's daughter.

  

In fact, the only thing we could do to get her away from 'worm highway' 

(what we dubbed the 20 foot path of worms along the edge of our grass) 

was fly a kite!

What a weekend! Kites AND worms!!

At bedtime, when I asked her what she wanted to talk about, instead of Snow White, she answered, "WORMS!"

A farmer's daughter indeed.

Spring is Springing

I remember growing up in Northern California and it being hot outside on Cinco de Mayo. You could wear shorts, play outside - even go swimming.

Here in Eastern Washington, where we have four seasons, spring is still in the process of springing. (Spring must be as out of shape as me!) We are still bundled up in pants and jackets, rain clouds are still in the forecast and the wind never seems to rest, but all the blooming flowers are making me anxious to get outside, regardless of the elements. On our outing outside today, we discovered Charlotte's tree has blooms!! That makes me happy!
